Keppra/Levetiracetam (generic)

Keppra: Keppra is an excellent long term anti convulsive treatment that has the added benefit of being associated with an exceptionally low incidence of toxicity. The draw back of Keppra at this time remains its high cost. Therefore, in most cases, Keppra is reserved for use in dogs as an additional anticonvulsant to be used in cases where seizure suppression has become refractory to doses of phenobarbital and potassium bromide that are approaching the maximum. It also may be a better choice than potassium bromide for additional anticonvulsant therapy for cats in cases where phenobarbital alone does not adequately control seizures.

Hi, Shelia and Brady,

Somehow, we ended up with FIVE seizure dogs!!! The only one we knew who had seizures beforehand was the last (a 12-year-old foster who moved in and stole our hearts within a couple of hours). The other four started having seizures between 14 months and 3 years old.

Things happen for a reason, and there's definitely a reason they found us (or maybe the case is that WE found THEM?)

Just wanted to let you know I'm getting levetiracetam from a pet compounding pharmacy in Scottsdale, AZ called Diamondback Drugs. 90, 285mg capsules are $26 (and shipping is only $4).

They can also compound KBr capsules (60, 325mg capsules are $23).

You may want to check them out: 866-646-2223.

Doggie kisses to Brady!

Wow...5 seizure dogs! God bless you for being such a devoted pet parent. I know it takes a very special person to deal with all that epilepsy entails. I agree with you completely that things happen for a reason and I too believe that these special dogs are sent to us for a reason. Thank you so much for telling me about Diamondback Drugs. I will definitely keep that in mind. I am very fortunate that our local pharmacy is working with us on all of Brady's meds and is price matching with the bigbox pharmacies like Costco. Brady thanks you for the doggie kisses! Hugs to all of your epi babies and of course, the non-epi ones too.
Take care,
Sheila

Hi.

So, how is Levetiracetam (Keppra) working for you?

My dog, a 4.5 y/o intact male, has secondary epilepsy and the most we got with the "standard" Pheno/Kbr mix is 1-2 clusters every two weeks (down from 1-4 clusters a week).

Therefore we are now considering Levetiracetam (Keppra).
